40 Ways to Help
Have you wondered what you could do to help poor and homeless children and adults in our community? To commemorate SOME's 40th Anniversary we have listed 40 ways that people like you are bringing joy to the life of a child or adult. Choose to participate in one of the 40 ways listed, or let us know your ideas of how you would like to help.

- Volunteer to tutor a student at SOME’s Center for Employment Training (CET).
Share your professional experience and expertise with students who are entering or returning to the workplace. Please contact 202.292.4460 or cetinfo@some.org for additional information.
- Volunteer to provide assistance to a vulnerable homebound senior in SOME’s Caregivers program.
Support a vulnerable senior by delivering groceries, making regular reassurance calls and assisting them with light housekeeping. Please contact 202.581.8000 ext. 104 or caregivers@some.org for additional information.
- Host a drive for seasonal men’s clothing.

Start a “Penny War” at your school or in your classroom.
Compete within your class or across your school to see who can collect the most pennies for SOME. Contributions may be sent to SOME, 71 "O" Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001. - Bring your friends and family to 71 “O” Street, NW and take a tour of SOME.

Going on a trip? Collect your hotel’s trial size toiletries for SOME.

- Ask guests to donate to SOME in lieu of bringing a gift to your birthday party, wedding or other special event.
When your friend or family member makes a contribution to SOME in your name, we will send you a beautiful personalized card alerting you of their gift.
Provide new underwear, socks and thermals for homeless women and men.

- Organize a food drive in your community or in your office.

- Make a donation to SOME.
- Bring some popcorn and host a movie night in the community space for the families at one of
SOME’s affordable housing programs.

- Have you been meaning to clean out your garage? You and your family can host a yard sale
to benefit SOME.

- Gather your family together and spend the afternoon landscaping a low-income senior’s yard.

- Attend one of SOME’s Empty Bowls events in March.

- Ask a SOME representative to come talk to you and your community about how you can
address homelessness in DC. Then, take action and join our Advocacy Network.

Provide paints, paper and other art supplies for our programs.

- Sign up for regular updates through SOME’s e-newsletter.
- Tutor and mentor a child in one of SOME’s affordable family housing programs or at SOME Place for Kids.
You can help a formerly homeless child develop the academic and life skills that they need to be successful.
- Give a homeless person a fresh start with a donation of new or gently used washcloths, towels and sets of twin sheets.

- Host a “percentage day” for SOME at your store or business.
Set a date and donate a designated portion of your store's revenue to SOME. Let us know when and we'll put it on our website.

Bridge the digital divide and teach a basic computer skills course to SOME clients.
Volunteers are needed to provide basic computer skills training at the Center for Employment Training and at our affordable housing programs for homeless single adults.
- Increase a Center for Employment Training student’s self-confidence and help him/her prepare for the working world with professional hair and make-up assistance.

- Be a sight for sore eyes – purchase eyeglasses for homeless patients in our Medical Clinic.
New or gently used over-the-counter reading glasses such as those available at most drug stores; most needed are +2.50, +2.75 and +3.00 eyeglasses. These donations are gratefully accepted at our 71 "O" Street, NW location Monday - Friday, 8am - 3:30 pm and Saturday - Sunday, 7 am - 2 pm.
- Share your special skill, talent or hobby with residents of one of our affordable housing programs.
- Help a man in recovery take his next steps. Donate a pair of new boots that he can wear at SOME’s residential addiction treatment program in West Virginia.
Snowfall can be significant in the mountains of West Virginia where SOME's residential treatment programs are located. Sturdy boots will keep our clients warm and dry.
- Warm and woolies! Collect coats, hats, gloves, scarves and thermals from November – January.

- Help SOME Go Green! Donate Compact Fluorescent light bulbs to help supply SOME’s more than 30 properties.
In addition to being good for the environment, Compact Flourescent bulbs help to reduce electric bills at SOME's programs.

Encourage the graduates of SOME’s Center for Employment Training by attending a commencement ceremony.

- Honor a loved one on their birthday or anniversary with a donation to SOME.
When you make a contribution in the name of a friend or family member, SOME will send them a beautiful personalized card alerting them to your gift.
- Form a team for the So Others Might Eat Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger.
SOME's annual 5K timed run and fun walk is a wonderful way to help the homeless and hungry on Thanksgiving morning. Round up your family, colleagues and community members and join us.
- Work with your church, synagogue, book club or other community and provide meals for hungry men, women and children.
SOME relies on the support of Provide-A-Meal groups to serve more than 800 hot nourishing meals each day in our Dining Rooms.

Prepare, serve and enjoy a lunch or dinner at one of SOME’s transitional housing programs.

- Monopoly, anyone? Host a game night for kids or seniors in our residential programs.

- Use a charity search engine such as GoodSearch that earns money for designated charities (SOME!)
every time you do a search. It’s a great way to help while you do what you do every day –
look up information on the internet!

- Become a SOME Sustainer and have your monthly gift to SOME automatically deducted.
A convenient way to give, your Sustainer support also reduces SOME's administrative costs.
- Stay Connected: Follow SOME on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, MySpace and YouTube.

- Take them out to a ball game. Provide tickets to cultural and sporting events for our clients.
