Process of Becoming a Volunteer

Becoming a volunteer is a process, from the initial inquiry, until a volunteer is accepted at SOME. The process includes:

Initial Inquiry

  • After initial inquiry, a response letter is sent which includes application, reference forms, and brochures. Long-term volunteers have one application and short-term volunteers have another (shorter) application.

Before Acceptance

  • An application is returned to SOME.
  • References are received.
  • Those looking to volunteer for more than three months will visit and interview with several people (E.g., potential supervisor) and programs will then be arranged.
  • A visit for long-term volunteers, along with a stay (at least one or two nights) at Ghandi House is important to see where you will live.
  • Agreement between the Director of SOME and the volunteer, as to specific job. This agreement will then be put into writing.
  • Agreement as to the beginning date.
  • Applicant must serve a meal in our dining room and attend a social justice workshop.
