Family Affordable Housing
To meet the increasingly acute need for affordable housing for extremely poor and homeless families in Washington, DC SOME has opened three new affordable housing programs for families since fall of 2005. These programs house 43 formerly homeless and extremely low income families, and we are currently developing housing for an additional 22 families. In February of 2008 the last of 12 families moved into Zagami House, SOME's newest affordable housing program for families. SOME extensively renovated an existing building to create this safe, affordable housing program. Zagami House will also be the site of a brand-new playground, which SOME will build with support from Giant Food and KaBOOM! and proceeds from the 2008 SOME Junior Gala. In June 2007, SOME opened Barnaby House, providing safe, affordable apartments for 10 additional families, along with a community space and a computer lab for after-school programming. Located adjacent to Barnaby House is Chesapeake Street, another affordable housing program for families that SOME is currently developing. The Chesapeake Street property, comprised of 22 two-, three- and five-bedroom units for families, is expected to open in June 2008.
Independence Place, SOME's first affordable housing program for families, provides long-term, safe housing for 21 families. Additionally, the building houses a community space that includes the SOME Place for Kids program. As we continue to provide affordable housing in Washington, we invite you to help us locate existing multi-family buildings or open land that SOME can use to house those in need. Contact SOME at housing@some.org or 202.797.8806 with any information. Referrals of eligible families are accepted from both individuals and service providers. |
