Independence Place
Independence Place is a 21-unit apartment building for families. The facility contains seven 4 bedroom apartments and fourteen 2 bedroom apartments. The program provides long term housing for families who are homeless, displaced, residing in substandard conditions, or living in unaffordable housing. Families renting apartments sign a lease and pay 30 percent of their gross monthly income toward rent. Families at Indepenedence Place receive monthly case management designed to promote autonomy, empower greater self-assurance and increase ability to obtain resources to improve and enhance financial status. Referrals are accepted from both individuals and service providers. This facility is also home to an enrichment and nutrition program for children. The new program is called SOME Place for Kids and provides educational activities and structured recreation. SOME has decided to name this affordable housing for low income children and families Independence Place because we feel that providing decent, safe, and attainable housing will help homeless families establish roots and achieve independence. Volunteers are needed to assist our residents in grades K-3rd with reading, reading comprehension, and phonics from 6:00pm to 7:00pm Monday thru Wednesday. For more information, contact Carolyn Penn at cpenn@some.org. Independence Place |
