Single Adult Housing
Single Room Occupancy or SROs are a relatively new concept in the effort to end homelessness. These programs are not shelters - tenants sign a renewable one-year lease and pay their own living expenses. Rent is set at 30% of each resident's income, which enables participants to save for self-sufficient living. SROs provide a balance of independence and support. Residents must follow house rules, remain clean and sober and pay their rent on time. Residents have access to case managers and the other social services SOME provides, however, they also have the opportunity to live independently. SOME's SROs include Shalom House, Anna Cooper House, Jeremiah House, and Freedom House. Additionally, SOME is providing long-term housing in the Oxford House model. The Joseph Smith House is the first of SOME's programs which helps ten single adults live independtly. SOME recently purchased a building on Good Hope Road and has begin plans for renovation into housing for 45 homeless senior citizens. We hope to complete construction and start housing residents by the end of 2007. As we continue to provide affordable housing in Washington, we invite you to help us locate existing multi-family buildings or open land that SOME can use to house those in need. Contact SOME at housing@some.org or 202.797.8806 with any information. |
