Shalom House
Shalom House provides 94 formerly homeless adults with affordable, long-term housing. Since SOME renovated the building in 1989, Shalom House has provided safe, supportive, drug and alcohol free housing for hundreds of adults. By opening the housing program, SOME revitalized the SRO (Single Room Occupancy) concept as a viable way to address chronic homelessness in the District of Columbia. Shalom House was the first new SRO facility in DC in over 70 years in DC. Residents are provided a private, furnished room and share a kitchen and bathroom in common. Residents of Shalom House benefit from on-sight case management, as Service Coordinators work with them to set and achieve goals, find better employment, maintain recovery and sustain stable mental health. Shalom House is an integral part of the SOME continuum of care as people benefit from affordable housing as they complete the CET program or move from SOME's Transitional Housing Programs. Rent is based on a sliding scale and people who would otherwise be homeless are able to afford safe and secure housing. For some residents, Shalom House is a stepping-stone to their own apartment as they learn the skills necessary to budget, pay rent, and live independently. For others, Shalom House is the first stable housing that they have enjoyed in years and they are able to flourish in the secure and supportive environment as they work to maintain their recovery or mental health. For everyone though, Shalom House is a home. Shalom House
