Affordable Housing

One of the greatest challenges confronting homeless individuals is finding and maintaining affordable housing. Providing affordable housing to our neighbors in need is a critical component of SOME's mission to help the poor and homeless to become independent and contributing members of our community.

SOME has been providing affordable, safe housing with support programs for homeless and poor families and single adults for more than 18 years, providing more than 300 units throughout the City. Over the next five years, the Washington metropolitan area is expected to lose as many as 26,000 affordable housing units.

To meet this growing need, SOME began the Affordable Housing Development Initiative with a goal of creating 1,000 units of affordable housing to meet the needs of nearly 2,000 poor and homeless residents in the Washington, D.C. Since the start of our Affordable Housing Development Initiative in 2005, we have completed or begun renovation on 339 units that will provide housing for 67 families, 49 elderly, and 175 single adults, including the mentally ill.

SOME is working with funding partners including the City, foundations, corporations and private individuals to raise $20 million to leverage at least $150 million in public and private financing to make our goal of housing nearly 2,000 poor and homeless residents a reality.

Bill and Joanne Conway’s recent $5 million pledge to the Initiative has helped SOME off to a great start, and we look forward to working with our committed donors and friends to create safe, affordable homes for our poor and homeless neighbors. We are also advocating for District policies and programs to address the affordable housing crisis and the immediate needs of homeless individuals and families.

As we continue to provide affordable housing in Washington, we invite you to help us locate existing multi-family buildings or open land that SOME can use to house those in need. Contact SOME at housing@some.org or 202.797.8806 with any information.
