Volunteers pack up food to bring to homebound elderly

Volunteers pack up food to bring to homebound elderly.

SOME's Interfaith Caregivers Program matches volunteers with local homebound, low-income seniors. This program is based on the concepts of concern and respect. SOME's Caregivers help to alleviate the isolation and loneliness of homebound seniors as well as offer the much needed assistance with practical needs. Volunteers provide telephone companionship, friendly visits, transportation and escorts to doctor appointments, light housekeeping, errands, reading, minor home repair, emergency food delivery and other services based on individual needs. Volunteers are always needed to offer their time in any of these capacities.

In addition to the volunteer staff, a case manager is on staff to address other needs and provide vital links between the homebound seniors and the appropriate community resources.

Special Need
Volunteers are currently needed to provide companionship to the homebound and isolated elderly. Volunteers may assist in providing transportation to and from medical appointments, telephone reassurance, prepare light meals, light housekeeping, food delivery and errand running. This opportunity would be great for an individual as well as for a small group of volunteers to work as a care team for one homebound senior citizen. We are especially in need of assistance with transportation to medical appointments and errand running. To get more information or to volunteer, please contact the program coordinator at 202.581.8000 or caregivers@some.org.
