Graduates of the Center for Employment Training

SOME's Center for Employment Training (CET) gives extremely low-income and homeless women and men in DC the opportunity to receive intensive job training so that they may find new directions in life. The mission of SOME CET is based on a philosophy of self-determination. We seek to promote the human development and education of low-income people by providing them with the marketable skills training and supportive services that contribute to self-sufficiency.

CET provides thorough education in marketable skill areas that were identified through an industry and market survey. The curriculum is designed with the needs of employers in mind, and SOME CET is constantly adapting to ensure that CET graduates will always be in high demand. Currently, CET offers training in three areas: Computer and Office Skills, Building Maintenance and Repair, and Certified Nursing Assistant.

In addition to teaching the skills critical to each training area, CET teaches the "soft skills" that are essential to obtaining and maintaining employment. These skills include developing a work ethic, arriving at the center and punching in on time every day, putting in eight full hours and being productive the entire day. CET staff also stress the importance of maintaining a positive attitude toward the job, as well as toward supervisors and coworkers.

CET provides a low student/instructor ratio of 20:1 so that students receive individual attention. Students move at their own pace without penalizing those who move at a slower pace. Nevertheless, the training is intensive. Students typically spend six months in the program, putting in 35 hours a week in training. Students work on reading, grammar, writing and comprehension skills that are pertinent to the job for which they are training. Actual work conditions are simulated, allowing CET participants to develop their employability skills. Training curricula are designed to meet industry-specific job tasks and to prepare the student to perform all those tasks in an entry level job. Additionally, students work with a placement counselor to identify possible employment tracks, participate in mock interviews and attend resume workshops.

In addition to empowering the poor and homeless to help themselves, SOME CET is a tremendous resource for employers who want to hire talented individuals. Every CET graduate is prescreened to ensure that the employer's requirements are met, and employers will save money by hiring CET graduates because SOME does not charge employers fees.
