Recent Happenings at SOME – June
July 18, 2017
SOME runs 38 programs and there is always a lot going on! Here are some recent events in our programs from June.
The seniors at SOME Kuehner House recently participated in a chair exercise class from University of the District of Columbia’s BODYWISE Program. The BODYWISE Program is specifically designed and operated to promote health, wellness and fitness for persons 60 years of age or older in the District of Columbia. The health and wellness benefits of this class include an increase in participants’ cardiovascular efficiency, muscular strength, flexibility and overall life satisfaction, as well as health and preventive knowledge. The participants had a wonderful time, enjoying the exercises tailored to fit their needs, the music and the high energy environment brought to the class by the instructor. SOME has implemented a health and wellness initiative for our residents and we’re so excited to learn about this program specifically created for senior residents of the District. SOME’s Development Team had the opportunity to visit the construction site of The Conway Center, SOME’s 320,000-square-foot building that will offer affordable housing, job training and health care under one roof. The Conway Center will occupy a full city block and is located directly across from the Benning Road Metro. During the tour we walked through most of the building and had the opportunity to see future affordable housing units for single adults and families, the classrooms for SOME’s Center for Employment Training, the green roof and children’s playground area, Unity Healthcare’s Medical & Dental Health Center and the beautiful entrance to the building. While still a under construction it was amazing to see how far the building has come since our groundbreaking ceremony and to look at the beautiful view out a bedroom window of a family’s future home. You can view the live feed of The Conway Center construction site and learn more about the building here.
SOME Center for Employment Training works to empower people out of homelessness and poverty and into living wage careers through hard and soft skills training, adult basic education and career development. We recognize that education is critical to career development and to help our students to build these skills, SOME CET teaches basic math and reading in the context of technical training. Recently, Ms. Huggans celebrated an educational milestone when she made a 12 point gain on her Math CASAS test, becoming the first SOME CET student to advance two grade levels on one test. Way to go Ms. Huggans! Learn more about CET, including how to apply for training and employer partnership opportunities.
We recently had three important anniversaries for SOME’s affordable housing programs. Griffin House and Gasner House celebrated their five year anniversaries and Chesapeake House celebrated their ten year anniversary! Gasner house provides 49 single adult housing units, Griffin House provides 22 apartments for families and 17 single adult housing units and Chesapeake House provides 22 apartments for families. Many of our programs celebrate their anniversaries and we were able to join Gasner House for their celebration. We enjoyed a delicious meal with staff and residents and had a wonderful time listening to the residents testimonials. Congratulations to Griffin, Gasner and Chesapeake on their anniversaries!
