Recent Happenings at SOME – October
November 6, 2017
SOME runs 38 programs and there is always a lot going on! Here are some recent events in our programs from October.
SOME Health and Wellness Fair
SOME’s Health and Wellness Initiative’s signature event is the annual health fair and this year the event was held in collaboration with SOME’s family services. At the fair participants could participate in Zumba and yoga demos, cooking demos, free massages and meet with various community health organizations. There was also the opportunity to pick out free produce to take home. It was an awesome event where everyone had the chance to learn about and access community resources that promote health and wellness.
Our Family Services department had a great time celebrating Halloween with boys and girls from SOME’s affordable housing. We had spooky music playing, themed decor, had a pizza party with Halloween cupcakes and the staff dressed up too! The Halloween Party was a great chance for the youngest residents to have a safe and fun Halloween painting pumpkins, trick or treating, showing off their costumes and playing games! Some of the costumes of the night were Wonder Woman, Batman, a witch, a pirate and Ninja Turtles.
Professional Development Day
This October, SOME staff held their 2nd Annual Professional Development Day in our Dining Room and it was a great success! Guests learned about professional behavior in the workplace, 30 second elevator pitches and how to dress appropriately for the job. Our guest speaker, Ms. Vanessa Elliott, Department of Homeland Security shared with the audience the history of her career path and answered questions from the audience. They then had the chance to shop and pick out professional clothing to take home with them.
